Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday attributed the industrial harmony in the state to his administration’s approach to workers’ welfare and capacity building in the state.
Speaking at a four-day capacity building workshop organised by the state’s Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions in conjunction with Rosette Consulting in Lagos, Ambode reiterated his administration’s commitment to invest in trainings and other activities and programmes that will ensure the continuation of industrial harmony in the state.
The governor, who also wondered why there has been so much breakdown of industrial harmony in Nigeria, boasted that his administration seems to have found the answer to the frequent crisis between government and the unions.
Ambode represented by the state’s Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr Akintola Benson-Oke, also lauded the workers’ unions for refusing to embark on any industrial action since inception of his administration.
Describing the theme of the workshop entitled: “Trade Unionism, Collective Bargaining, and Leadership for Trade Union Leaders”, as apt, he said, “the Lagos State Government and the organised labour unions in the state have utilized the process of collective bargaining to further mutual understanding, deepen trust and concretize a symbiotic relationship among the stakeholders.
‘’The labour intercontinental body, the International Labour Organisation, defines collective bargaining as an instrument that measures appropriate to national conditions shall be taken, where necessary, to encourage and promote the full development and utilization of machinery for voluntary negotiation between employers or employers’ organizations and workers’ organizations, with a view to the regulation of terms and conditions of employment by means of collective agreements.”
Wondering why the workers’ unions are still enmeshed in crisis with government in some parts of the country, Ambode added, “In Lagos State, we have found the answer. Indeed, the difference between the Lagos State model and the vanilla model elsewhere is that in Lagos State, we invest heavily in capacity building for trade union leaders, government officials charged with the management of trade union matters and for workers generally. We are gathered to kick-start the beginning of one of such capacity building efforts.’’
