The Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) yesterday in Abuja presented the report of its committee on the recent building collapse in Jabi, Abuja to the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). The report was received by the COREN president, Engr. Kashim Ali in his office during a meeting with heads of all relevant professional regulatory bodies, including the development control wing of the Federal Capital Development Authority for scrutiny and discussion among the stakeholders with prime aim of finding lasting solution to human error based building collapse.

Recall that following the incident which happened in July this year, NBRRI set up an investigation committee to look into the immediate and remote causes and make recommendations.
Speaking to newsmen, Engr Ali who expressed unreserved regret over the incident said “in the last few years we have been dealing with the issue of building collapse, and when we thought we have advanced beyond that level of recording building collapse due to human error, this painful happened.” The COREN boss assured that recommendations from the report and the meeting will be implemented fully in due course, adding that it will be mandatory for all buildings of engineering standard are handled by certified registered engineers across the country, even at the local level.

Speaking, the DG/CEO, NBRRI, Engr Danladi Slim Matawal said the findings in the report fingered very shoddy implementation at site, substandard material, shallow debt of foundation, wrong sizes of members which were not suitable for the design.“What we are trying to do at this meeting is to take monitoring even to the grassroots, so that it is not only urban focused. “But we would like to appeal to Nigerians to ensure that every step taken on their building right from design be monitored by certified competent professionals,” he said, adding that those found culpable in the Jabi collapse will be sanctioned accordingly.
