Ahead of the forthcoming African Youth Festival scheduled to hold in November, the University Peace Federation (UPC) has called for the collaboration of the media to consolidate on various campaign activities to promote peace in the country.
The Secretary-General of the NGO Dr Raphael Oko who made the call at Media Representative Conference held in Abuja with the theme; “The role of the media in the forthcoming Africa Youth Peace Festival” stressed on the importance of peace as a vital tool to ensure progress.
“The country stand to benefit a lot because the huge yearly budget on security can be channeled to development of the nation and increase bilateral relationships with other countries of the world” he said.
Oko noted that Nigeria was the heartbeat of Africa and as such at the centre point to drive peace culture round Africa. He added that UPC is hosting the first youth peace festival tagged Africa Youth Peace Festival (AYPF).
He continued, “This ceremony is a celebration of the commitment of our youths to peace there is no better time than now that our elections are approaching, we hope to establish a foundation for peace ahead of the election through peace culture.
“The role of the Media as the fourth estate of the Realm is indispensable because they are a powerful tool in the fight against corruption, social vices, ethnic and religious rivalry”.
