The Federal, state governments in collaboration with development partners are committing about $18 million for mass replacement of Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs), the director of Malaria and Sickle Cell Control in the Katsina State Ministry of Health, Dr. Lawal Aliyu Rabeh, has said.
Rabeh, who disclosed this during media orientation for LLINS distribution in Katsina yesterday, said malaria accounts for about 70 percent Out-Patients Department (OPD) attendance and 30 percent admission in health facilities in the state to buttress the burden of the disease.
The director appealed to members of the public to support the nationwide crusade for a Malaria free Nigeria by adopting the use of LLINs as a major malaria vector control strategy.
Earlier, the representative of the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) of the Federal Ministry of Health, Emma Ekpor, revealed that through this effort, over 60 million LLINs were distributed to all the states of the country between 2009 and 2013, while a total of 77.586.714 LLINs were distributed from December 2013 to November 2017 in 30 states.
“This year, Katsina State Ministry of Health, NMEP and Society for Family Health in collaboration with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) will oversee the distribution of about 4.7 million LLINs in Katsina State with the aim to replace the LLINs distributed in 2014,” said Ekpor.
