LEADERSHIP A Yau, the Hausa flagship title published by LEADERSHIP Newspapers group clocked one year of existence today.
LEADERSHIP recalls that Ayau, the first and only Hausa daily newspaper in Nigeria, hit the newspaper stand on September 11, 2017.
The need for a daily Hausa newspaper was borne out of the desire to provide the missing link for the teeming Hausa reading population in the country.
Mulling the idea about a year ago to replace the weekly LEADERSHIP HAUSA, which was in circulation for 10 years, with LEADERSHIP A Yau, the chairman of LEADERSHIP Group, Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, consulted media industry experts, veteran journalists, opinion leaders on the need for a Daily Hausa paper to be established.
The consultation led to the establishment of the Ayau title, which consists of LEADERSHIP A Yau daily, LEADERSHIP A Yau Friday, LEADERSHIP Ayau Saturday and LEADERSHIP A Yau Sunday.
The Editor, LEADERSHIP A Yau, Suleiman Bala Idris said yesterday that the paper has grown from a little beginning to a widely accepted vernacular title in Nigeria.
On the circulation of the paper, Idris noted that there is no part of Nigeria where Ayau is not on the newsstand.
According to the editor, the aim of the publisher is first, to bring objective news, analysis and opinion closer to none English literate Nigerians.
The aim, he insisted, has been achieved to a larger extent, just as he admitted however that there are more grounds to be covered.
Speaking on how A Yau has contributed to enhancing socio-political and economic discourse in Nigeria, Idris explained that the burden of having to wait for a whole week to read vernacular newspaper by Hausa-speaking Nigerians, which was hitherto the case, has been eliminated, thereby bringing on board the segment of the society that would have been marginalised.
He called for emphasis on the teaching of local language, saying that that it is currently one of the challenges of vernacular newspaper industry.
Idris noted that most press releases in Nigeria are written in English, which is a herculean task for managers of vernacular Nigeria news paper.
He however appreciated Nigerians, especially those who do business with the paper.
