A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State yesterday adopted the us of direct primaries in selecting candidates for the party in the 2019 general elections in the state.
This is as one of the governorship aspirants on the APC platform in the state, Architect Tonye Dele Cole begun his campaigns ahead of the party’s primaries with a visit to community in Kalabari Kingdom of the state.
The APC faction, in a communiqué issued yesterday at the end of its expanded State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in Port Harcourt, said direct primaries will afford its members the opportunity to participate in the process.
The communiqué, which was signed by the factional Acting Chairman, Prince Peter Odike, said the decision was in consonance with the APC’s position and desire to make the elections in 2019 and beyond reflective of the will and aspiration of the people.
It reads in part: “The State Executive Committee (SEC) commends His Excellency, Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of our great party on their recent decision to entrench internal and participatory democracy in the party through the approval of the use of direct primaries as the mode of selecting candidates for election in our party.
“The SEC commends the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari for repositioning Nigeria for continued greatness.
“The Rivers State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) is grateful to Mr. President for his style of leadership which has rekindled our belief and hope in democracy.
“The State Executive Committee, unanimously adopts and affirms the use of direct primaries for choosing all our candidates in the forthcoming 2019 elections, it affords party members the opportunity to participate in the process.
“The above decisions are in consonance with party’s position and desire to make elections in 2019 and beyond reflective of the will and aspiration of the people.”
Meanwhile, governorship aspirant on the platform of APC in the state, Architect Tonye Dele Cole, visited communities in Kalabari Kingdom to further seek for the support of the people.
Cole, who was accompanied by Chairman of APC in the state, Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree as well as chieftains of the party including, Prince Tonye Princewill, Dr. Dawari George, and Christian Don Pedro, visited Abonnema in Akuku-Toru local government area and Buguma in Asari-Toru local government area.
