The Gombe State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday disclosed that out of the 98 candidates contesting for the party’s tickets for the state assembly, only 8 of them are women.

The state organising secretary of the party, Madam Hanatu Maina Wakili, who gave the figures to our correspondent in Gombe said the number of female contestants is not encouraging despite the fact that the party slashed the nomination fees for female contestants to N100,000, far below the N600,000 paid by their male counterparts.

According to her the abysmal women representation defeats the clarion calls by the party for active participation of women in politics and governance.

“Our party considered the important role of women in politics and in governance, hence we slashed the prices for those showing interest to vie for various positions in order to encourage them but the level of interest is below expectation,” she noted.

She said more women are needed to participate actively in politics and governance in Gombe State and Nigeria if they are to have fair representation.
