The Nasarawa State government said it has constituted a committee to regulate activities of inflammable operators particularly gas businesses, to conform with environmental safety regulation standard aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, dropped the hint when he paid an assessment visit to the scene of gas explosion in Lafia, the state capital, yesterday.
The governor said that government had taken the deliberate measures to prevent reoccurrence of gas explosion in the state.
He warned that henceforth, operators of gas business in the state must do so in adherence to the relevant regulations or face the wrath of the law.
Al-Makura, disclosed that the state government had beckoned the Department of Petroleum Resources (PDR) to come to Lafia and conduct assessment of the area with the view to extinguishing the gas emission in order to prevent more damage to lives and property.
He disclosed that already nine persons including a baby that had been removed from her mother’s womb who was severely burnt died, leaving other 37 with severe burns.
The governor said that aside the victims that were rushed to Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia, where they are currently being treated, 17 of them were taken to National Hospital Abuja, while eight victims with 60 per cent degree burn were taken to trauma centre for more attention.
Al-Makura, assured that government would continue to provide care for the victims of the gas explosion, even if it means taking some for referral abroad for better attention.
