Malam Salihu Sagir Takai, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant and longtime political ally of former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau has declared that he remained in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
This declaration of Takai is coming few days after Ibrahim Shekarau’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) having dumped the PDP at the weekend.
Takai who was the governorship candidate of the PDP during the 2015general elections was also commissioner of Water Resources and later of Local government during the eight-year tenure of Shekarau when he served as governor of Kano state from 2003 to 2011.
The defection of Shekarau to the APC was trigged by the return of his longtime political rival Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the PDP. According to Shekarau he was forced out of the PDP by alleged perceived injustice from the national leadership of the party
However, Malam Takai in a statement in Kano disclosed that he has resolved to remain in the PDP. According to him, “after extensive consultations with my supporters, admirers, well-wishers, party faithful at different levels including aspirants to various elective offices it was clear that majority wanted us to remain in the PDP and as a democrat I have no option than to heed to the opinion of the majority by remainingin the PDP.”
Mr Takai revealed that it took him more than four days consulting with his supporters on the state of affairs in the PDP in Kano since the dissolution of the state executives by the national working committee of the party and the subsequent defection of some members led by Shekarau.
He stated that “For the past four days, we have undertaken extensive consultations with various segments of the good people of Kano on whether to remain in the PDP or defect to APC. We consulted our state, local government, ward committees and coordinators throughout the state, PDP spirants for National and State House of Assemblies, various support groups, community based organisations such as religious groups, the business community, community leaders, elders, youth, women and others.’
“I hereby report that the outcome of these consultations showed that majority wanted us to remain in the PDP. In view of this opinion of the overwhelming majority, I hereby announce to the people of Kano State that I alongside my teaming supporters hereby remain in the PDP. At the same time continue with my aspiration of becoming the next governor of Kano State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP come 2019,” Takai declared.
In the same vein, the governorship aspirant while thanking his supporters for remaining steadfast in their support for him also pledge allegiance to the state leadership of the party.
Malam Takai has since led his campaign team and supporters on a solidarity visit to the State caretaker committee led by Engr Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi a loyalist of Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.
During the visit, while pledging his loyalty to the party leadership, the governorship hopeful urge them to be just and fair to members of the party and ensure strict adherence to the party’s constitution in the discharge of their assignment.
Responding, the Kano State PDP Caretaker committee Chairman Engineer Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi assured the aspirant of the commitment of his team to ensure justice and equity among the members of the party.
