Nigeria Begins U-21 Boys’ Volleyball Africa Nations Cup With Victory



Nigeria’s national U-21 male volleyball team started their campaign for honour at the ongoing U-21 Boy Volleyball Africa Nation Cup at the indoors volleyball court, Package B of the Abuja National Stadium on a good note with a 3-2 victory over Cameroon. The host lost the first two quarters 24-26, 23- 25 to Cameroon but bounce back to 25-21, 25-16 victories in the third and fourth quarters respectively and went ahead to won the last set 16-9 to the delightful of their teeming fans.

Meanwhile Morocco defeated Lake Chad in the opening game of the tournament in three straight set 25-16, 25-14, 25-16 respectively. The best two teams from each pool will proceed to semi-finals, battling to secure slots to the final. The champions and beaten finalists will automatically book tickets to represent Africa at the 2019 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship to be staged in Bahrain. Declaring the championship open, yesterday, Nigerian Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung charged the athletes to play fairly and embrace the spirit of sportsmanship during the one week long event.

Dalung who was represented by the permanent secretary of the Ministry Youth and Sports, Olusade Adesola, welcomed all the participating countries and assured them a good hospitality of Nigerians. “I am delighted to welcome you to Nigeria for the African Championship beginning as qualifying tournament to the world cup. I wish you all the best.
As host nation, our mandate is to offer you the best hospitality and successful hosting,” he said.
