Members of the African Diplomatic Group in the Federal Republic of Nigeria yesterday observed Africa Day 2018, tagged, “Fighting Against Corruption in Africa”.
By way of commencing the line up of programmes, the Group hosted its formal evening on Friday 14, at the Sheraton hotel in Abuja.
At the function, the Liberian ambassador Alhassan Conteh, gave the opening address at the event, welcoming guests.
On why the theme, “Fighting Against Corruption in Africa,” the Ambassador indicated, “ there has been a wastage of resources to corruption. For example we know that the African Union has estimated that it will take 600 billion United States Dollars to fund the Sustainable Development Goals. But there is an estimate between 50 billion to 100 billion dollars is lost this year to corruption in Africa.
“So I think because of this very high magnitude of lost resources which should have been spent on education, for health for infrastructure the African Leaders this year felt that it was very very important to declare war on corruption and this is why.”
The Dean of the Africa Diplomatic Group who also gave an address appreciated the Nigerian President For his service to the African Union, speaking broadly on this year’s corruption theme to note profoundly, “Africa day is a time we collectively celebrate our unity in Africa.”
Amongst other things, the Africa Diplomatic Group gave a donation of N500,000 to the Rochas Owelle Organisation supporting the less privileged across Africa in their educational pursuits.
The evening event included speeches, cultural performances and a buffet dinner of cuisine of the various African states represented in Abuja.
Meanwhile yesterday, the Group also held a friendly soccer match at the compound of the Embassy of Egypt, which commenced at 9:00 am to end at 12 noon also as part of the Africa Day activities.
According to a statement released by the Group and made available to LEADERSHIP Sunday, by the Minister Counselor/Press & Public Affairs
Liberian Embassy, Abuja, Nat Bayjay,
the annual celebration usually slotted for 25th May, was postponed as a result of several activities held during that period which included the observance of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The observance of the day ended yesterday with a donation of tennis equipment to talented kids of Abuja at the Abuja National Stadium.
