FG Determined To Fight Trans-border Crimes – Dambazau

The minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdurrahman Bello Dambazau (retd), has said the present administration, in recognition of the security of the nation’s border and its quest to enhance immigration services, is coming up with initiatives to fight irregular migration and trans-border crimes.

Speaking during a visit to Katsina State governor, Aminu Bello Masari, represented by his deputy, Mannir Yakubu, the minister said the government is making concerted efforts including establishment of five pilot border bases in the country to secure its vast borderline.

Dambazzau, represented by Dr Bello Mohammed Umar, permanent secretary, in the company of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Muhammad Babandede, who were in Katsina to officially flag off the Forward Operation Border Patrol Base at Mazanya-Jibia, further noted that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration planned to return the border air patrol which had been dormant for quite a long time.

“Initially, the federal government was thinking of wall fencing the border but we felt that would be an ambitious plan at this moment when there are some other competing needs, said Dambazzau.

Receiving the minister, Governor Masari, who noted that Katsina had a long porous border with Niger Republic, expressed gratitude to the federal government for choosing the state as one of the beneficiaries of the pilot border patrol bases across the country.

“We sincerely welcome this very energetic method of making it (border security) mobile so that the security will be more efficient, more so with the issue of farmers – herdsmen clashes which have been giving the nation a lot of trouble and also the use of land border for human trafficking which is also well known and affecting our prestige and economy in the world at large,” the governor stated.

In his remarks on the launch of the base, the Comptroller General, Muhammad Babandede, said, “Jibia axis is one of the major routes of trans-Sahara migration. The sitting of this facility here is strategic and designed to increase the capacity of the service to effectively deter such movements and other forms of trans-border crimes such as trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, proliferation of Small and Light Weapons (SALW), terrorism and smuggling of goods.”

At the palace of the Katsina monarch, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, the minister of Interior, Lt Gen Abdulrrahman Bello Dambazzau (retd), in the spirit of thanksgiving, said “Katsina (the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari) is indeed the home of the best president ever produced in our life time.
