The Budget Office of the federal government has appropriated N12.4 billion for capital projects at Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) in 2018 compared to N11.7 billion appropriated last year.
Out of the amount appropriated last year, only N7 billion was released for capital projects, a document from the Budget Office made available to LEADERSHIP has revealed.
Speaking at the pre-qualification bidding exercise bidding exercise held at headquarters of the corporation yesterday, acting managing director of the Corporation, Niyi Ali , said that the bidding process would be transparent.
The director of procurement Mr. Ben Iloanusi, in his remarks said that the bidding process formed part of the requirements for awarding contracts for projects in the Corporation. According to him, the NRC received over 1,000 submissions from contractors bidding for projects.
Ilaonusi declared that the submissions made were opened and verified in presence of the bidders who were called up one after the other. He stated that the process of evaluation which would be completed by October this year would determine the number of contractors that would be approved to handle projects for the NRC this year, adding that the pre-qualified and unpre-qualified bidders would be informed accordingly after the evaluation
The director was however, quick to add that the award of contract projects under various categories would depend on release of fund by the budget office.
Some of the projects bidded for according to the advertisement include: procurement of tools, equipment and materials for emergency repairs and maintenance of tracks, emergency repair and maintenance of tracks, bridges and culverts, renovation/upgrade of railway stations, procurement of locomotives, coaches and wagons.
