Enyimba International of Aba are through to the semifinals of the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup after a 5-1 demolition of Rayon Sports of Rwanda in Aba, yesterday.
Goals from Stanley Dimgba, Ikouwen Utin, Sunday Adetunji, Joseph Osadiaye and Oladuntoye Isiaka powered the Aba People Elephants to their biggest win in this year’s continental campaign, cruising past their visitors 5-1 on aggregate following a goalless draw in Kigali last weekend.
Stanley Dimgba opened scoring for the two-time CAF Champions League winners at the 12th minute into the game following a defensive error by the visitors.
Rayon, though, were not going to go down without a fight and pulled a level to the shock of Aba’s football fans in the 25th minute before the hosts regained the lead through Ikouwem Utin four minutes later.
Enyimba came out firing after the break and doubled their advantage in the 48th minute as Dimgba teed up Sunday Adetunji for an easy finish following a devastating move.
Joseph Osadiaye strengthened Enyimba’s advantage on the hour mark as his deflected free-kick found the back of the net.
Isiaka Oladuntoye made it five with 10 minutes of regulation time remaining after Abouba Bashunga had fumbled the initial effort. Oladuntoye made no mistake, heading home to seal a convincing display by the hosts.
Enyimba will now be looking forward to take on the winner between Raja Casablanca and CARA Brazzaville in a potential thrilling semi-final battle.
