The Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Nsima Ekere, has promised to rename the Akwa Ibom International Airport, Uyo after a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, if elected Governor in 2019.
Ekere a governorship aspirant under APC, who spoke at the special solidarity rally for him and President Muhammadu Buhari by the people of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District at Uyo Township Stadium on Saturday, said Attah deserved the honour being the initiator of the airport.
He equally promised to rename one of the best dualized roads in the Akwa Ibom State after the immediate past Governor of the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in appreciation of his uncommon infrastructural development of the state.
Similarly, the pioneer civilian Governor of the state, Late Obong Akpan Isemin, will be honoured with the renaming of the Tropicana Entertainment Centre, Uyo, after him.
Ekere explained that the gestures were intended to appreciate the three former governors for their tremendous contributions to the development of the state.
“The incoming APC government will run a unity government in which all the leaders and stakeholders of Akwa Ibom State will be recognized,” he promised. “We will run a government that will look after the people of the state.”
The NDDC boss pledged that the incoming All Progressives Congress (APC) government will focus on building the economy of the state, creating employment opportunities and revamping agriculture.
Ekere particularly singled out the Ibom Deep Seaport at Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area, as one project the APC government will execute because it was capable of creating thousands of jobs and transforming the economy of the state.
He promised, on assumption of office as Governor in 2019, to resume the payment of bursaries to students of Akwa Ibom origin which the State Government had stopped in the last three years.
Ekere said he was overwhelmed by the show of love and solidarity to him by the people of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, coming shortly after the people of Akwa Ibom North-West and Akwa Ibom South Senatorial Districts had endorsed him for the governorship election.
