Niger Expends N7.3bn On UBE

Niger state government under the administration of Governor Abubakar Sani Bello has expended about N7.3bn  from the backlog of  counterpart funds  intervention of 2013-2014 and 2015 -2016 accessed by the government for  Universal Basic Education, UBE.

Addressing members of the Niger State Media Strategy and Communication Committee in Minna, the acting chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Alhaji Abdullahi Nasir Ndafogi,  stated that tremendous efforts have been made in using the funds judiciously and change the infrastructures narratives  of the schools positively.

According to him, “ We provided 27,524 sets of double seater Pupils’ furniture, about 9,502 sets of double seater students furniture and 2,722 sets of ECCED Plastic Chairs/Tables”.

He stated further that NSUBEB provided 4,937 sets of furniture for teachers and  procured assorted ECCED Classrooms materials and play equipments through completed  access of  2013 and  2014 UBE intervention projects that was outstanding before the administration.

Ndafogi disclosed that, “with N3.7billion fund, we constructed 578 classrooms, renovated 369 and reconstructed nine schools under the Whole Schools Approach” while also stating that educational management information system centre has been constructed at the SUBEB headquarters,Minna.

The acting chairman also disclosed that the Niger state Basic Education operational plan has been developed  even as effort is being intensified by the Niger State government to replace the over 6,000  Basic school teachers that have either retired from or died in  active service  from 2015 to date.

He disclosed that the Board  has sought for  approval from the state government to  immediately  replace  teachers on retirement or when they died in order not to create vacuum in the system.

According to him, the vacuum created as a result of the non-replacement of these teachers is seriously undermining efforts by the state government to revamp basic education as the foundation of learning.

He also disclosed that the Board has always focused on teacher quality,stressing that about 11,850 teachers and education managers have been trained while the promotion of 9,014 of them have been effected since 2015.
