Athletes from, Ethiopia,Cameroon and Kenya have indicated interest to participate in the first annual Enugu International Half Marathon Race slated for 2th November this year in Enugu State.
Addressing journalists yesterday on the forthcoming event tagged: “Coal City International Marathon”, Enugu State Commissioner for Information, Mr Joseph Udedi hinted that so far, 1,500 participants have registered for the event.
He disclosed that the winner of the event will receive $3,500 while the first runner up will be given $3,000, adding that twenty prizes would be given out at the end of the 21km race while consolation prizes will also be given out.
Udedi, told journalists that the state Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi is very interested in the upcoming event, adding that after the governor approved the event in July this year, they swung into action to ensure the success of the event.
The commissioner further disclosed that the race will be flagged off at Okpara Square in front of the Enugu State House of Assembly, adding that the end point of the event will be the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
Udedi further told newsmen that they had gotten in touch with some hospitals in the state that will certify the health status of all the participants, stating that those that will participate in the event will be hundred per cent fit.
On security for the participants, Udedi stated that Enugu State remained the safest city in the country, assuring that participants of the event will be highly secured.
He appealed to Enugu State residents to come out enmasse to encourage the participants, assuring that the state will benefit from the event economically, culturally, amongst others, adding that the state will use the opportunity to showcase a lot including its cultural heritage.
