Makarfi, Kaduna PDP And Doublespeak

Published

on

The Kaduna State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is in the news again for all the wrong reasons. While other state chapters of the party are consolidating to form a wining team and have a win, win situation, a certain group in my party here in Kaduna is unfortunately working hard to ensure that the old order of imposition of candidates is sustained.
The resolve of the PDP nationwide is for the party to make the will of the people sacrosanct so as to give the party a good outing in all elective positions ahead of the 2019 general elections. But a different script is being played by non other than a former governor of the state and someone who every one that meant well for the party, stood firm to ensure that his role as a National Caretaker Committee Chairman of our great party was not cut short, he is non other than Senator Ahmed Makarfi .
No one needs to be reminded that Senator Makarfi enjoyed a great measure of support from all and sundry while he held sway at the Wadata Plaza. But, today, he has chosen to pay party loyalists like us back in bad coin.

It is unfortunately true that Senator Makarfi, through the Kaduna State Chairman of our Party, Hon Felix Hassan Hyet is fighting tooth and nail to ensure that his cronies become the party’s flag bearers in the forthcoming party primaries. This, to say the least, is as sad as it is unfortunate, given the fact that the same Makarfi, at the national level, is moving from one state to the other, preaching that the will of the people should be respected in the choice of the party’s presidential candidate.
The question is, who is Makarfi fooling? No one can eat his cake and still have it, He should know that he can not be singing different songs for the same music and get the best in both at the same time. Statesmen are known to be consistent and not engaged in double-speak.
It is rather ironical that someone who wants internal democracy to be respected at the federal level, in choosing the presidential flag bearer, is singing a different song in Kaduna State because he is the ‘all in all’.

Makarfi, to state the obvious, is betraying statesmanship. Just last week, there was a joint press conference by Kaduna State PDP Governorship Aspirants Unity Forum comprising of Distinguished Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi, Alhaji Mohammed Sani Sidi, OFR, H.E Dr Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, Dr Muhammed Sani Bello and Dr Shuaibu Mikati, in Kaduna, to raise concerns on attempts to impose a preferred candidate of Makarfi.
Among other things, they resolved that: “As democrats’, the Forum insists that power must truly return to the people through open and transparent process anchored on internal democratic process in our great party.
“The Forum also observed with dismay the deliberate attempt to subvert the democratic process ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial primaries slated for the 28th of September, 2018”.
Senator Makarfi should, among other things, quickly withdraw his support for any candidate, he should not just make a press statement through Mukhtar Sirajo, denying that he has no preferred candidate.
Makarfi must act like the former Vice President Namadi Sambo, who had maintained his neutrality in the run up to the party primaries despite the fact he remains the leader of the party in the state. No wonder the national leadership of our great party tasked him to screen all presidential aspirants seeking the party’s ticket. As party members we will continue to look up to him as a leader in view of his undoubted statesmenship.
As a party loyalist, I urge Makarfi, as his press statement suggests, to work to ensure that;”the democratic rights of all of them must be respected by the party, providing a level playing field for all to participate in a free and fair primaries at which party members will freely take a decision.”
As a thorough democrat who has the good of our beloved party at heart, I wish Senator Makarfi well and pray that he comes to terms with the fact that our common good is still better than anyone’s selfish interest.
