Minister for Education, Adamu Adamu, yesterday lauded National Teachers Institute (NTI) management for introducing Advance Diploma in Environmental Education.
According to the minister, the diploma programme which was coined as the Green Teacher Nigeria (GTN) Programme will serve as a means of creating more awareness on environmental problems in Nigeria. Represented by the executive secretary, National Board for Technical Education, Dr Mansur Mas’udu Kazaure, the minister made the commendation at the formal launch of the Diploma Programme organised by NTI, in collaboration with Commonwealth of Learning (COL) Canada, in Kaduna.
Adamu said already, the United Nations has dedicated three of its Sustainable Development Goals (namely goals 13,14 and 15) to the environment as well as how to protect and make it habitable.
He said, “This programme we are launching today has the prospect of creating greater public awareness about the indicators of quality and healthy environment and what constitute the natural and man-made causes for its degradation. “Let me emphasize here that the environment and issues around it are on global agenda for comity of nations. For any nation to be able to write her name in gold in the world map, there is the need for her to harness her resources and utilise it efficiently.“In doing this, the citizens should not tamper with the nation’s ecosystem, forests, biodiversity and other natural habitats. As a nation, we must conduct ourselves in such a way as to promote the establishment of peaceful and inclusive societies that thrive in economic development and social well-being.”
Earlier in his remarks, director general of NTI, Professor Dahuwa Azare, enjoined the new students to take their studies seriously.
He reiterated the commitment of the institute to train and retrain teachers at all levels of the nation’s education system.
“The Green Teacher Nigeria Programme is one out of several other innovations we want to venture into in order to revolutionise education sector in the country,” he said.
He congratulated the staff of the institute and specifically the members of the GTN core team for their doggedness, resilience and cooperation in seeing through the new programme.
