5 Health Benefits Of Moringa

The moringa leaves is starting to gain more popularity as the latest ‘superfood,’ because of its high nutritional content and many other health benefits.

Moringa, also known as horseradish tree, drumstick tree or ben oil tree, is a small tree from India, Pakistan, and Nepal that has been used for generations in the eastern countries to treat and prevent various diseases such as, heart disease, anemia, digestive disorders, arthritis, liver disease, and diabetes. It has become well known as a natural leaf powder supplement, although the flowers, seeds, pods, roots, bark, and fruits are edible as well.

It has been promoted as the Miracle Tree of Africa, thanks to its contribution to fighting malnutrition.

Here are 5 health benefits of moringa.

1. Regulates blood sugar

Eating a tablespoon of lightly toasted moringa leaves early in the morning, is a traditional herbal medication for hyperglycemia. Recent studies using leaf powder on diabetic animals, shows that this is undeniably helpful in regulating blood sugar. The advantageous effect is partly attributed to the fibre content, but the quercetin-3-glucoside in moringa as well as the isothiocyanates and chlorogenic acid could be playing an important role.

Small-scale studies on diabetic people, have shown promise with just 7 grams of moringa leaves in powder form, taken for a period of 3 months. It has also been found that taking 50 grams of fresh leaves as part of normal diet considerably reduces blood sugar.

2. Promotes weight loss

Moringa leaf extract and leaf powder have been reported to support weight loss. This positive effect could serve as a result to various factors plus, the anti-inflammatory and diuretic effect helps decrease water retention. The high content of fibre also reduces fat immersion in the gut.

3. Fights cancer growth

Cancerous growths are prompted by unrestricted drastic damages at the cellular level. It isn’t a surprise that moringa should have an anti-cancer effect. Lab tests have proven that it has a positive action against ovarian, liver, lung, and skin cancer. Although more studies are being done to assess the clinical significance of these findings, it wouldn’t hurt to include more moringa in our diet or use just about 7 grams of leaf powder (1 ½ teaspoons) as a nutritional supplement.

4. It protects the liver

Moringa can decrease liver impairment and fibrosis and reverse oxidation in the liver as well. Moringa oil can also reduce oxidative stress, restore liver enzymes to normal levels and increase the content of protein in the liver. It contains high concentrations of polyphenols in its leaves and flowers that protects the liver against toxicity, oxidation and damage.

The liver is accountable for blood detoxification, nutrient processing, bile production, fat metabolism and fructose metabolism, and it can only fulfill these functions with the aid of liver enzymes. So it’s vital they stay at standard levels because, lower levels of hepatic enzymes can weaken its ability to filter the blood.

5. Protects and nourishes skin and hair

The oil in moringa seeds helps protect hair against free radicals while keeping it clean and healthy. Moringa also contains protein, which means it is helpful in protecting skin cells from damage. It also comprises of hydrating and detoxifying components which also enhances the skin and hair.
