IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja will host Ghanaian leading golf club, Achimota Club of Accra, in an international match-play friendly to mark Nigeria’s 58th Independence anniversary.

The Ghanaian contingent of 50 golfers will slug it out with their Nigerian counterparts in a double match-play on the 18-holes golf course at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, today.  The single match-play between the two clubs holds tomorrow after the Independence Cup tournament.

The visit by Ghanaian golfers is in keeping to the long held traditional where both West African nations engage in match-play for the past 15 years as a mark of comradeship to commemorate their national days.

The chairman, Independence Day Golf Tournament Organising Committee and vice-captain of the IBB Golf Club, Shola Awoyungbo, said upon arrival, the Ghanaians and other invited guests would be treated to a cocktail.

He said both Nigeria and Ghana share common values in education, business, politics and sports dating back to the past when Ghana used to be known as Gold Coast.

“Independence Day Golf event is a major item in the Club’s calendar and it is put together every year to celebrate our country.

”It is part of our commitment and what we stand for in remembrance of our country. It is also to appreciate the government of the day for their achievement.

“The matches play part of the tournament is a long tradition and friendship established with Ghanaian leading golf club, Achimota, and they are coming with 55 golfers,” Awoyungbo said.

The Independence Day Golf Tournament will feature a total number of 312 players, who will jostle for trophies and souvenirs in different categories, including men, ladies and veterans. Shotgun format will be used to tee off the players in the morning and afternoon.

The captain of IBB Club, Oseni Ahmed, encouraged other participating guests to tee-off a commemorative Independence Day Golf Tournament, one on both the front and back in order to avoid slow play due to the large turnout of golfers for the annual event.

Aside from golf, IBB Club tennis section will also host 20 Ghanaian tennis players from Borma Tennis Club of Accra in a match play to commemorate the Independence Day.
