The President of Children’s Government of Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation, Patrick Ikpeme has announced the intention of his group to build a two billion naira Children Leadership Development Institute in Lafiya, Nasarawa State.
Ikpeme made this disclosure in Abuja when the group addressed a press conference.
He said the funds for the project would be sourced without the intervention of government.
On the choice of Lafiya, the Nasarawa State capital for the project, Ikpeme said: “We had a chance meeting with the executive governor of Nasarawa State, Alhaji Umar Tanko Almakura, in Abuja. He received the children very well and also gave them N1million and assured them that whenever they are ready, he is willing to give them free land for their proposed institute.
“He even assured us that, if it will take evacuating all the residence of Lafia for the project to materialise, he will do it.
“We also paid a courtesy visit on the Emir of Lafia, where he instructed his secretary to write a letter immediately, offering us a land for this project.
“We think we owe them the honour of locating this project in Nasarawa State, given its proximity to Abuja.”
Speaking on the relevance of the programme for children, the National President Progressive Youth Movement, Ambassador Charles Chukwu explained that: “The UNICEF and Child Right Act states clearly that children must be involved in policies that directly affect them.
It is for the purpose of initiating children into the realities of their existence and also giving them a chance to participate and see exactly, what it is like to be leaders of tomorrow.”
