Meet Morphy Dread: Brain Behind Abuja Reggae Festival



Murphy Dread is a Versitile Radio presenter, hypeman, promoter and event manager in Abuja, Nigeria. He is one of those personalities championing the entertainment industry in the Federal Capital City. Born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, he grew up listening to RnB, Hip Hop and Reggae music, recorded radio programmes of David Rodigan, Chris Goldfinger, Barry G etc. After high school and college, he Joined Peace FM 90.5 radio Jos for a year then moved to Lagos. While working with Coca Cola, he was sent to Kano, Nigeria. While on assignment in Kano, he Joined Ray-power FM, Kano because of his passion for entertainment and Reggae Music.

By 2007, he moved to Abuja, Nigeria and resigned his appointment with Coca Cola plant, Abuja in 2011 and went into entertainment full-time till date. Murphy Dread was privileged to sing with Mc Afropop Artistes like P square, Dbanj, and Ruggedman concerts in Kano City, Nigeria. He has anchored Nigeria Independence event in Ransburg South Africa 2014 when he visited South Africa, Miss Nassarawa State University beauty contest 2015, Jamrock Party Abuja 2016 and others. “I was privileged to share stage as a Hypeman with DJs like DJ Sose, DJ Humility in Nigeria and DJ Scratch in South Africa.”
“I went to Johannesburg, South Africa in 2014 where I met a reggae artiste cum producer, El Supreme at house of Tandoor Yeoville, South Africa and recorded his single, Turn Up on the 9th September, 2015 to mark his birthday,” he explained.

Murphy Dread has interviewed Rymzo, General pype (Nigeria), Wyre (Kenya), Nc Dread (South Africa), Stone Bwoy, Jupiter(Ghana), Ras King Mas, Jamaican reggae Dancehall, artistes, producers, promoters via phone and also live on radio in Abuja, Nigeria, from Jamaica Sexy diva Yanique, Busy Signal, Lutan Faya, Exco Levi, Lt Stitchie, Donisha, Kelissa, Raine, Bushman, Cocoa Tea, Tarrus Riley, Chris Martins, Queen Ifrica, Marlon Asher, TJ Records, Shane C Brown, Bobby Konders Hot97 NY and others.
“I have also covered some few events like the Freedom Concert in Ghana, Reggae events in Lagos, Jos, Benue, Port Hacourt, Nigeria. Got many press media passes for festivals in Europe, USA and the Caribbean e.g Rototom reggae festival, Redbull Clash South Africa, Reggae Sumfest, IRAWMA and others.”
In 2017, December 4th, Murphy held his first Reggae event themed “Abuja Reggae Festival” which is now in its second edition.
