The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) is set to collaborate with the House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture Production and Services to harness agricultural potentials of the nation across the 774 local governments in the country. In his address while interacting with newsmen in Abuja, the national president of ALGON, Hon Gambo Tanko-Kagara said the move became necessary to fast track the diversification of the nation’s economy via agriculture in line with the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government.
According to the national president of ALGON, “Nigeria is blessed with abundant agricultural resources that could create wealth and reduce unemployment if adequately harnessed.’’
He said to achieve the feat, the association would sensitize all local government chairmen of on the need to key into the programme for national economic growth and development.
Hon Kagara, therefore, called for effective public private sector collaboration in revamping the country’s agricultural sector. He also stressed the need for more legislation that would further boost and encourage more investment in the sector. ‘’Nigeria economy is blessed with series of natural resources, yet they suffer in the midst of plenty. Nigeria has a high poverty rate in comparison with other African countries despite its higher GDP. ‘’Currently, Nigeria has over 80 per cent of its land arable but unfortunately less than 40 per cent of the land is cultivated despite the country’s teeming population and level of unemployment. ‘’Hence, the need to reform the agriculture sector cannot be over emphasized,’’ he added.
