As part of efforts in ensuring that young girls are rightly informed about their reproductive health and as well remain protected against sexual violence, a girl-child advocacy group, Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI), has called for girl-child empowerment.

The Lagos state team leader, GMI, Abiodun Ajayi, in an interview with LEADERSHIP, said lots of girls are being molested every day in Lagos state and Nigeria at large.

Ajayi said there is need for all Nigerians to protect the image and interest of the girl child because they are valuable to the society.

He said, “If you go to some areas in Lagos state, a lot of our girls are being molested. Every girl child is valuable to every society and if we don’t place priority on them, that means we are calling for a society that is not well developed because they are a tool to developing every society.”

Speaking on what the organization has done to empower the girl-child, the team leader said a coalition has been formed in order to formulate a document that will help safeguard the interest of the girl child.

He disclosed that the initiative is also working on taking all street girls back to school. “The essence of this programme is to basically bring together CSOs, individuals and key players together where we can formulate a document that will help safeguard the interest of the girl-child.

“We find it so essential that we come together and formulate a document that will be united. We are working on bringing back all the street girls back to school and we are following it up to the end of this course.

“We have formed a coalition to ensure that we have a very good and conducive youth friendly centre for our girls. A lot of them need information about family planning and how to assess information that will empower them. We also want to ensure that these girls are also protected against domestic violence,” he added.
