There was uproar at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), as staff, members of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, struggled with men of the Police Force to bar the suspended executive secretary of the scheme, Prof. Usman Yusuf, and his entourage from having access to the complex.
However, one of the aides to the secretary who came in before the his arrival forcefully opened the keys on the gate without any molestation, while men of the Police Force attached to the complex reportedly teargassed staff in order to give way for the ES to gain access into NHIS complex.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the Policemen attached to the FCT earlier deployed some of their men in the NHIS in order to forestall a clash between Yusuf’s men and the union.”
Yusuf, who was suspended by the governing council of the NHIS last Thursday, ignored the resolution of the council, insisting that the board had no power to suspend him as this was the exclusive power of the President.
Speaking to newsmen, Chairman of the NHIS chapter of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Abdulrazaq Omomeji, , said the governing board lived up to its role as an ambassador of the anti-corruption crusade of the President by suspending Yusuf.
Reacting to Yusuf’s non-compliance with the suspension, Omomeji said the suspended ES misinterpreted the Act setting up the agency.
Omomeji explained that the suspended executive secretary has a case of fraud which is against the agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The council has the power to suspend him and he remains suspended. Not only on suspension, he is to face a panel,” he said.
Also speaking, the NHIS chairman Medical and Health and its joint union, Comrade Olawuyi Kayode, noted that the governing council who suspended the executive secretary have the mandate to suspend him, adding that union is in full support of the governing council’s decision.
Kayode explained that Yusuf has forced the management to sign billions of Naira in the guise of investment.
“The executive secretary remains suspended, but since he has forcefully gained entrance with the help of the police, we are calling on President Buhari who is a man of integrity to do the needful,” he averred.
Earlier, the Chairman, Nigerian Civil Service Union, Mohammed Shehu, said the union do not have the right to stop the ES from accessing his office, adding that Nigerians are in support of his good work.
“Whoever is here creating havoc is a beneficiary of corruption, he has the backing of Nigerians and he remains the ES,” he added.
