Workers Adamant On Removal Of NHIS Boss

Unions and staff members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), yesterday vowed to remove the Executive Secretary of the scheme, Professor Usman Yusuf following corruption allegations. The unions which include the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria and Nigeria Civil Service Union, made the vow during a protest at the NHIS headquarters, yesterday in Abuja. The angry workers and union arrived the headquarters before 9am, chanting “Yusuf is a fraud,” “Yusuf must go,” among others, until Yusuf left the office around 10:20am.

Addressing newsmen during the protest,the chairman, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Abuja council,Comr. Shtoabo Abubakar said, “As long at Professor Yusuf remains in office, we will not relent on our protest until he is removed as the Executive Secretary, if it takes us three months, we will do it.  “We want the president to see what is happening, let him know the person he put in power is not protecting his interest,” he said. On his part, the vice chairman, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCN), Comrade Theophilus Egwudah said he made his brother’s son the general manager for procurement and the company he used to secure the job is the brother’s company. He also alleged that Mr Yusuf fraudulently awarded a contract of N17.5 million to his brother’s company.
