Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, has said  that he was pained by the demise of Miss Ochanya Ogbanje who was sexually abused for five years by a polytechnic lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja and his son, Victor.

Ortom stated this, yesterday in Makurdi when he received over ten groups including old students of the Federal Government Girls College, Gboko(Ochanya’s Alma mata) who protested from Benue State University (BSU) to Government House to register their grievances over the death of Ogbanje and as well seek for quick dispensation of justice.

Represented by the chief of staff, Terwase Orbunde, Ortom said that he was saddened by the pain the little Ochanya went through up to the moment of her death assuring that justice would be served on the matter.

‘’I feel pained because I have daughters, I am also a grand father, What if it were my daughter? Why would an old man of that age and his son who is about to graduate in a university take to evil and terminate a life of an innocent minor, like Ochanya? The law must take its course on this matter,” Ortom fumed.

The governor condemned the dastardly act in its entirety, adding that all the abused people should speak out so that the world would know their plight and as well step in, to arrest the situation.

He admonished people against stigmatising the victims of sexual abuse, stressing that if they were stigmatised most of them would not be encouraged to come out to make their cases public.

In his submission, the president, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Gideon Obande called for a review of the justice system to give room for quick dispensation of cases, adding that justice delayed is justice denied.

Obande further sued for the acceleration of the hearing of the case, stating that NANS would continue to monitor the case to the end to ensure that Ogbanje get justice even in death.

The NANS  president appealed to the Benue government to immediately relieve Ogbuja of his appointment and should not wait until the case was finally determined.

The representative of Federal Government Girls College where Ochanya until her death was a student, Elizabeth Manger, call for the arrest of the wife of Andrew Ogbuja, Felicia, who she said her character marks a clear negligence  of her duty as a mother and care giver, even when her attention was drawn to Ochanya’ predicament by her daughter who caught Victor with Ochanya red handed.
