The UN Security Council expressed serious concern on Tuesday over reports of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in Somalia’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The UN said that there could be a “complex relationship between IUU fishing and piracy.”

Noting that IUU fishing can contribute to destabilisation among coastal communities, the Security Council believed that it accounts for millions of dollars in lost revenue for Somalia each year.

UNSC unanimously adopted resolution 2442 to remain seized of the matter, and the resolution called upon all countries to criminalise piracy under their domestic law.

And also to favourably consider the prosecution of suspected, and imprisonment of those convicted, including pirates apprehended off the coast of Somalia, and their facilitators and financiers ashore.

The resolution also urged Somalia’s authorities to continue their work to pass a comprehensive set of anti-piracy and maritime laws without further delay and establish security forces with clear roles and jurisdictions to enforce these laws. (Xinhua/NAN)
