Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) is a field of study that normally attracts little attention from students because it is seen as difficult by most students. However, the Federal Government is promoting healthy competition amongst students to trigger creativity in secondary school pupils and spur their interest in STEM.

Speaking at the 12th edition of the project exhibition expo competition organized by Nigerian Television Authority NTA-ETV with the theme ‘Achieving self-sufficiency in agriculture, meeting the challenges of security and exposition of alternative energy as pathways to national development’ in Abuja, the acting director of the FCT department of Science and Technology, Ms. Christiana said healthy competition was spurring children to come up with innovations that help them pick more interest in subjects in STEM field.

The competition saw students from Government Science and Technical College (GSTC) Garki clinch the first position in the senior science category. The school represented by two students; Jessica Njoku and Fadilat Umar beat other competitors from 23 states to sail to the first position with their project ‘Converting waste plastics to clean fuel and combustible gas.’

Receiving the champions at the Education Secretariat of the FCT, the secretary for education, Dr. Bala Liman appreciated the students for their impressive outing and performance, saying they made both their school and FCT proud, even as he urged them to keep up the good work.

Liman who said every good work deserved commendation awarded the students with scholarships and appreciated their school teachers and science quiz desk officer, Engr. Funmi Jemisenia for their tireless effort in coaching and preparing the students for the competition.

In his remarks, the school principal, Mr James Kuta who expressed confidence in the students, said he was very optimistic that the school would do its best and double their efforts to ensure that the top positions being clinched by the students in recent competitions would be maintained in other competitions.

It would be recalled that the same students won the first position at a recent project exhibition/competition organised by the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion- NOTAP at the national level.
