While concerned citizens, donors and other international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are making efforts to assist in sending polio into extinction, few others are bent on its continued existence because of pecuniary benefits, said the people of Bodinga local government of Sokoto State, yesterday.

This is the case of a Team Coordinator in Sokoto, who diverted both oral and injectable vaccines meant to be used in the ongoing six days’ immunisation in their local government.

The incident, which occurred in Bodinga local government area of the state, angered majority of the locals who spoke to LEADERSHIP Weekend while on monitoring tour.

According to them, the Team Coordinator in charge of polio immunisation at Bangida Baga ward of the local government, allegedly diverted vaccines meant to be used in their area.

Though, they declined giving his name for reasons best known to them, the locals however, said police had arrested the Team Coordinator over the act. They further appealed to all other Team Coordinators to have the fear of God far and above whatever pecuniary gains.

Speaking on the development, executive director, State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHDA), Alhaji Adamu Romo, said both vaccines and allowances needed for the six days’ exercise were duly given to the said coordinator.

Romo however, wondered why the said coordinator decided to divert both the oral and injectable vaccines to his personal residence when they were meant to be used for his own people.

SPHDA Executive Director further noted that after the intervention of police, the polio oral and injectable vaccines, as well as the money had been recovered from the coordinator.

He expressed satisfaction with the turn out saying it’s quite impressive because the people were adequately sensitised.

On his part, the district head, Chiroman Bodinga of Bodinga, Alhaji Junaidu Abdulrauf, said they had created enough awareness hence, the large turn out witnessed.
