The speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Barrister Onofiok Luke, has given reasons why the state governor, Udom Emmanuel, must be reelected, come 2019.
Addressing members of the correspondent’s chapel of the NUJ in Uyo, Luke said that the campaign for the second term bid of the governor is not based on lies, deceit or propaganda.
According to the speaker, who is the chairman of Publicity and Image Management Committee of the Divine Mandate Campaign Organisation,”We are standing on the performance of the governor in the past three and a half years and not just a precedence of two terms.”
Luke pointed out that the circumstances that Emmanuel came into office must be taken into consideration when assessing his performance in office.
He recalled that the governor came into office during a recession period and this was challenging financially, but for Emmanuel’s knowledge of the economy.
Another factor that hindered the governor’s performance, Luke pointed out, was a protracted post-election legal battle that distracted the administration’s focus.
Luke appealed to opposition parties in the state to focus their campaigns on developmental issues and not on propaganda.
The speaker explained that the Divine Mandate Campaign Organisation is running a campaign based on the issues of peace, security and industrialisation.
He charged the electorates in the state to compare the present administration with the past and the immediate past one; and for the sake of peace, vote for Emmanuel’s second term.
Luke emphasised the fact that peace is needed for the state to continue to enjoy rapid industrialisation and development that leads to prosperity.
The speaker announced that the state government was working in collaboration with the legislature on a plan to establish a Security Trust Fund that will cater for security challenges and personnel in the state.
