Police Arrest 7 Over Sale Of Naira Notes

The Edo State Police Command has arrested seven people for allegedly getting involved in illicit sales of naira notes in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Parading the suspects, the commissioner of police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, said the suspects were not only involved in sale of currency notes but also specialised in counterfeiting the naira notes.

He gave the names of the suspects as, Frankling Izukwu, Bright Mugbeyogho, Obi Alex, Elvis Iyomana, Osazee Osagede, Victorial Igbinosa and Deborah Uwa.

He said the police was carrying out the presidential order of prohibiting the illicit sale of naira notes as enshrined in section 20 and 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act No 7, 2007.

Kokumo said the offence attracts punishment of not less than six months’ imprisonment or a fine of not less than N50, 000.

“During the exercise, N12, 580,235 were recovered from the suspects. We will investigate the matter because we believe that they are not acting alone and the investigation will be extended to commercial banks in Benin metropolis and beyond.”

According to him, the arrest was carried out in collaboration with the State Security Service and CBN.
