Total E&P in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has expressed worry over the prevalent cases of tuberculosis in Akwa Ibom State and enjoined the residents to be conscious of issues which cause the ailment in order to stay healthy.
At a Health Living Awareness Campaign organised for its host communities in Ikot Abasi local government area of Akwa Ibom State, the managing director of Port Harcourt District, Mr. Francis Le-Cocq, said that the 2018 health living awareness campaign of the NNPC/TEPNG joint venture for the host and neighboring communities of Akwa Ibom and River States was one of the key public health projects done yearly for the benefit of the people.
Le-Cocq, who was represented by the manager community affairs, Mr Okechukwu Obara, expressed worry over the prevalent cases of tuberculosis in most of its host communities and enjoined the residents to be conscious of the ailment in order to stay healthy.
He said that Nigeria is one of the 30 tuberculosis-endemic countries in the world.
Drawing inferences from the Nigeria prevalence survey of the ailment, Le-cocq pointed out that “570,000 persons fall ill with this disease each year.”
He explained that “tuberculosis is caused by a bacteria called mycobacterium tuberculosis,” adding that the disease mostly affects the lungs and could spread to other parts of the body through air and close contact.
He commended the NNPC; the government of Rivers State and the Uyachim Medical Nigeria Limited for being a part of the project to engender healthy living in the host communities.
