The chief executive officer, iCreate Skill Fest, Mr Bright Jaja, has called on the federal government not to relent in developing the capacity of youths in the country, saying vocational skills acquisition remains panacea to curb unemployment in the country.
Jaja who disclosed this during presentation of prizes and signing Memorandum of Understanding with the winners of 2018 iCreate Skill Fest entitled: ‘’The Olympics of Technical Skills’’ aimed at empowering youths to be entrepreneurs, decried that the government over the years had invested considerable efforts in improving university education with insignificant attention paid to polytechnics, technical and vocational schools.
He said such dichotomy had reinforced the belief by teachers and parents that success is measured strictly by obtaining academic qualifications not skills.
Jaja expressed optimism that a platform for youth to showcase technical and vocational skills will empower Nigerian Youths to meet global standard.
A graduate of Public Health, Madonna University, Okija, Anambra State, Mr. Alvintakon Otareh who won the cooking competition of the maiden iCreate Skill Fest said that despite his professional calling, he is also a great cook.
He, however, lauded the organizers for creating the platform for him to showcase his talent.
Otareh was followed by a female runner-up, Ms. Joy Onoseigbuan Danladi and Mr. Orbigele Phoebe who emerged third. They won N300, 000, N200, 000 and N100, 000 respectively and were also announced as the brand ambassador of iCreate Africa, BON Hotel and Cachez Design Abuja.
The cooking competition involves the use of local dishes condiments to prepare dishes.
The competition saw over 150 Nigerians competing for 17 skills including catering, dress making, painting, tailoring, art, photography, web design, app development and graphics design, among others.
