Former Director General of the defunct National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr Amos Adamu has lamented the poor level of sports sponsorship culture in the country.
Adamu while speaking to newsmen in Abuja said Nigerians lack sponsorship culture in sporting activities.
“It is very difficult to get sponsorships for sports in Nigeria, because we do not have the culture to invest in this country. Companies do not see the necessity in sponsoring sports programmes,” he said.
According to the former executive committee member of CAF, companies should always come and support sports as part of their corporate social responsibility as it is obtainable in other parts of the world.
“Companies should be looking out to sponsor sports competitions and not the other way round. Take a good look at South Africa, they sponsor sports programmes very well.” he added
Adamu however admonished sports federations to do away with all forms of secrecy surrounding the management of sponsorship funds, saying the federations must be transparent while handling such funds.
