Anambra Crisis: Lawmaker Calls For Police, DSS Intervention

A lawmaker representing Oyi/Ayamelum constituency of Anambra State, Hon. Chiedu Goodswill Eluemunoh has called on the Department of State Security Service and the Nigeria Police Force to intervene in the ongoing crisis rocking the state Assembly.

The lawmaker, who made the call in Abuja over the weekend, called on the security agents to ensure that the newly elected speaker take over the presiding of the Assembly, thereby bringing back peace to the House.

Speaking on his take on the crisis rocking the Anambra State House of Assembly, the APC lawmaker said, “It is a very simple thing; it is a legislative procedure. It is a parliamentary issue. Normally, when speakers don’t do well, you remove them. Even in my own tenure in the National Assembly, I was a member of the panel that removed the speaker. We removed our speaker, and nothing happened. It is a parliamentary matter; not one of the executive.

“The speaker, the deputy speaker was in plenary, and a vote of no confidence was moved against the speaker. He conducted it and out of 22 (members), 20 voted and two abstained. The speaker was removed, she accepted her removal. After going to see the secretary to the State Government, she now came out to say it was a charade; that nothing had happened.

“I am appealing to Mr President to order the Anambra State Police command, to lift the siege on the Assembly, so that the new speaker can do his work. The speaker has been elected; it is a parliamentary thing. He has been elected with popular votes; he should be allowed to do his work.

I know that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, is a very experienced officer.

“They should lift the siege, so that Ikem Uzoezie, who is the current speaker, will be able to do his work. Because, by besieging that place, you are helping the former speaker to say that nothing has happened. So, I am calling on the CP Anambra State; I am calling on the DSS state director, I am calling on the IGP and Mr President to order that the siege be lifted so that the current speaker will be able to do the job by which he was elected by his colleagues. If the governor is not doing well, and the speaker is (allegedly) shielding the governor, so be it. She has been removed means that she has been removed.”

Hon. Eluemunoh further called on the 21 lawmakers, who are members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA to come to the APC, where they will be welcomed and treated with respect.

He further called on the Anambra State House of Assembly members to impeach the governor, Willie Obiano if the need arises.

On the chances of the APC, heading into 2019 elections, he said, “We have asked Nigerians to give us some time. You know, PDP was in power for a very long time. For you to begin to turn things around, you need more than four years to do that. So, we are just turning things around. What we ask is for the people to allow us to prepare appropriately? It takes time for you to navigate the problems APC met in this country. We just managed these three years, to position the aircraft for take off. We are only asking for time for us to now implement our policies and wishes for our people.
