FoI Act: NGO Condemns Court Ruling

An Abuja-based non-governmental organisation, Almushahid Initiative For Transparency and Accountability (AITA), has condemned, a recent high court judgment, which challenged the right of the group to request for information on alleged corruption, based on the provisions of the 2011 FoI Act.

In his remark, president of the NGO, Ambassador Aminu Majidadi opposed the judgment, stating that the FOI Act empowers all citizens, who so wish, to demand information for purposes of accountability and transparency.

“We have instructed our counsel to obtain the full judgment to study and proceed to appeal immediately. We commend efforts of the EFCC, especially Kaduna branch, where the acting chairman assigned the case to be investigated,” he said.

Majidadi further called on the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the civil societies to rise against the judgment, which he described as an affront to the dignity of the judiciary.
