The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Yusuf Buratai has named the newly commissioned 2km road in Maimalari cantonment Maiduguri “Heroes Drive” and dedicated it to officers and soldiers both living and the dead, who have served or are currently serving in the Northeast theatre of operations.
The cantonment road which was commissioned by Buratai yesterday at the Maimalari cantonment runs from the Maimalari cantonment main gate and terminates at the roundabout leading to Headquarters Theatre Command, Headquarters 7 Division and other parts of the cantonment.
Describing the driveway as a very vital access to the cantonment, the Chief of Army Staff said due to long time of usage and exposure to adverse weather conditions, the road had however dilapidated, making what would have been a smooth drive into the cantonment very tortuous and unpleasant.
General Buratai who was represented by the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Abba Dikko said: “ Fortunately, however, despite the relentless commitment of the Nigerian Army to the ongoing counter terrorism and counter insurgency operations in the Northeast, my desire to strengthen the administration of personnel and the management of infrastructure in Nigerian Army cantonments and Barracks gave birth to this laudable project we commissioned today.”
“It is heartwarming and very encouraging that despite how far -flung Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri seems , it is considered a priority in the scheme of Infrastructural development plan of the Nigerian Army,” he added.
He recalled that very recently, the Nigerian Army conducted the foundation stone laying for the construction of state of the art holding facility at the joint investigation center, also in Maiduguri in a bid to apply human face to the war on terrorism and insurgency through effective management of arrested terrorists and Insurgents who are in custody undergoing investigation.
“Today, a 2km road had been successfully completed to bring succour to the officers , soldiers and their families in this cantonment . This road is therefore christened ‘Heroes Drive’ and dedicated to officers and soldiers both living and the dead, who have served and currently serving in the Northeast Theatre of operation,” he further said.
