As part of activities marking the celebration of World Toilet Day celebrated every 19th November every year, a non governmental organisation, Centre for Water and Environment Development (CWED) took the sensitisation campaign on the importance of maintaining an hygienic toilet to Kaduna State Special Education School.
Recall that the World Toilet Day was established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001. Twelve years later, the UN General Assembly declared World Toilet Day an official UN day in 2013.
Speaking on the day, the program manager of CWED, Shanni Doris Zakama said the UN-Water is the official convener of World Toilet Day. UN-Water maintains the official World Toilet Day website and chooses a special theme for each year and that in 2018 the theme is nature-based solutions.
She said toilets are important because access to a safe functioning toilet has a positive impact on public health, human dignity, and personal safety, especially for women.
“Sanitation systems that do not safely treat excreta allow the spread of disease. Serious soil transmitted diseases and waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, typhoid, dysentery and schistosomiasis can result.”
On behalf of the NGO, she donated Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) items and one hundred thousand naira for repairs of water system to the the school.
Responding, the school principal, Mrs Salamatu Shuaibu, commended the organisation for assisting them, she called on well meaning individuals and organisations to emulate CWED.
