Some Nigerians who applied for a South African Visa has petitioned the High Commissioner over seizure of their international passport, demanding N10million as damages.
In a letter written by their solicitors, Benedict Ebeshi &Co, signed by the Principal Partner, B. O. Ebeshi Esq and addressed to South African Embassy located at no 71 Usman Street, off Gana Street Maitama Abuja, the Nigerians asked for urgent released of their passports.
“We are Solicitors to Young Nigerians Against Greed, a registered association and the promoters of Farm Wealth Nigeria with its registered address at Plot 2, Road 11, off 1st Avenue, Gwarimpa, Abuja, Nigeria herein after referred to as ‘Our Clint’ on whose behalf and instructions we write this letter.”
“Our client briefed us and we verily believe same that sometime on 25th October 2018, upon an invitation to attend and present a paper at the International Conference on Agriculture, Food and Aqua taking place in Cape Town, South Africa, scheduled to hold on the 22nd and 23rd of November, 2018, (copies attached) they submitted the International passports of four of their under listed members who were carefully selected to attend the conference, to the South Africa Embassy in Nigeria at your Abuja vfs centre for entrance clearance into South Africa.”
“The names of the selected officers are: Pastor Olutoke Edward: Passport Number: A09263827, Mrs. Adebayo Modupe: Passport NumberA08578207, Mrs. Oyebade Folake: Passport Number: A09262971, Mrs. Oyebade Adejoke: Passport Number: A09848023.”
“To ensure that the entrance clearance is not delayed, our client paid close to N200,000.00 for VIP visa fees for the four delegates. However, for the past three weeks the Embassy has failed, refused and or neglected to release the said visa/ passport of the four delegates without any information, despite repeated demands made by our client with even a letter of reminder dated 13th November 2018 sent to your office and series of emails sent,” the letter said.
According to the lawyer, “It is on this note that we write and demand for the immediate and unconditional release of our client’s passports, refund of the visa fees, tender an unreserved apologies in at least three National Newspapers in Nigeria and make payment of the sum of N10million to our client as compensation for all expenses incurred and the monumental, unquantifiable and irrecoverable loss of the benefits of the conference to the organization, putting into consideration the fact that the conference is scheduled to start tomorrow (today) the 22nd November, 2018 and the delegates should have at least departed Nigeria today (yesterday) being 21st November, 2028 according to their flight and hotel bookings, yet their passports are still with you.”
According to the solicitors if the embassy refuse, fail and/or neglect to release the said passports and comply with their client’s demands in the manner prescribed above within seven days, they will opt for legal action.
