A combined team of Nigerian Railway Police and Railway Task Force has arrested 31 commuters for climbing rooftops and hanging on doors of coaches attached to Ijoko – Iddo Mass Transit Train.

The arrest is coming on the heel of earlier injuries sustained by two staff of the Corporation and some innocent passengers caused by crossfire of pebbles thrown by miscreants and roof top climbers.

According to Lagos District Manager of the Corporation, Engr Jerry Oche, some of the commuters on the rooftop of trains were equipped with knives, other sharp objects and stones, which they threw at people along the railway corridor thus resulting into retaliation by passers-by between Agege Railway Station and Iju Railway Station.

He declared that people arrested are liable to pay a fine of N50, 000 fine each or three months’ imprisonment, adding that the raiding of the Mass Transit Trains is carried out at regular intervals so as to discourage people from climbing the top of coaches to no avail.

One of the passengers arrested, Mr Biodun Alade said, “Most of the people arrested and forced to pay various amounts ranging from 50,000 to N20, 000 depending on individual ability.”

According to him, the passengers who perpetuated the throwing of pebbles simply took to their heels on sighting armed policemen while the security operatives had a field day and arrested people including passers-by at Iju Railway Station, indiscriminately.

Another passenger, Mr Tunde Alao, noted that the miscreants, on Wednesday night, at about 10:00pm threw stones and other dangerous objects at passengers inside the coaches, urging the management to rise up to the occasion in order to avert looming bloodshed.
