Expert Decries Low Diagnostic Capabilities Of Nigerian Hospitals

Amid fragmentation private diagnostic centres in the country, a member of the steering committee of Healthcare Federation of Nigeria, Dr. Benson Cole has decried the low diagnostic capabilities of the nation’s hospitals, saying it has grossly affected the way most diseases are treated in the country.

Cole who stated this at the official launching of Echo Lab in Lagos said most public hospitals offer only basic, low cost tests while the private hospitals tend to outsource advanced testing to diagnostic centres.

The medical expert added that across the country, branded clinics account for only seven per cent of all diagnostic tests.

To change the narrative, Cole said the Integrated Diagnostic Holdings (IDH), an international player in the diagnostic healthcare business, has partnered with Echo Scan Services Limited to form Echo Lab, with the aim of providing a wide range of diagnostic services.

These services, according to him include pathology, molecular diagnostics, genetics testing and radiology to patients.

He said, “Echo Lab has one of Nigeria’s leading medical diagnostics networks. Among patients and doctors, it has the third highest brand awareness. It is a full diagnostic provider and the Nigerian doctors have judged the Lab as moderately priced and of good quality.

“It operates across the country and IDH’s hub-spoke-and-spike model will ensure clinics become even easier for patients to access. Our goal is to build a world-class integrated diagnostics business and vastly enhance Nigeria’s healthcare offering.”

With $25 million in investments funneled into the operation over the next three years and a fleet of highly experienced technicians coming on board, Cole, who is also the chairman, Echo-scan Services Limited, said they plan to expand Echo Labs nationwide service offering, footprint and quality standards.

The chief operating officer, Echo Lab, Dr. Abimbola Jimoh said the partnership seek to reduce medical tourism. Jimoh said, “We found out that most of our people go to India, Dubai, America and the United Kingdom for diagnosis and treatment. With Echo Lab in Nigeria, we as a provider of choice are already in the works of providing fast, accurate, accessible test and report and this is a way of gaining the Nigerian trust.”

She said Echo Lab main goal is to deliver quality healthcare, at an affordable rate, as it is not about profit alone, but it is about delivery quality to the Nigerian people.
