Lagos State Police Command has called on its officers to ensure that there is peaceful, free, fair and credible election in the state in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
Speaking at a lecture tagged, “Mitigating Election Violence in 2019 general election” organized for police officers by Boundless Hand Africa Initiative, (BHAI) in partnership with Nigeria Policing Programme, NPP, held at Police Senior officers mess, Ikeja Lagos, Mr. Patrick Atayero, an Assistant Commissioner of Police said it is the duty of the police to ensure the polls are conducted in Peaceful environment.
He said though the entire country is looking ahead to the 2019 general election police must plan a strategy of maintaining violence before, during and after the election.
“As part of our democratic experience, as we progress as a Nation in other to enter among the committee of a nation that are considered to be advanced we must get our politics right and getting our politics right, we must get our election right.” he said.
Atayero, said the conduct of peaceful, free, fair and credible election is key to the nation’s democratic development adding that the major challenges facing the country is how to conduct a peaceful, free and fair election.
“In some advanced countries, this issue on conduct of free and fair election is taken for granted because election comes in a circle, every four years, every two years without necessary agitation”.
He added that, over time, two major issues have been problematic, the issue of electoral fraud from different machination as INEC is coming up with a strategy to reduce fraud so are the politicians are at work coming to counter the strategy to perpetrate fraud.
“If we need proper conduct of peaceful, free and fair election we must reduce Electoral malpractices to minimum level and shun violence at any point because election looses credibility if it is characterized by malpractices, ” he said.
He added that there will international actor that will be coming from all over the world to monitor the nation’s election and if there is violence whatsoever it has affect the credibility of the election.
