The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has organised ‘Abuja Barracks Children Open Chess Championship’ to enhance thinking capability of the children in the game of Chess.
Speaking at the event over the weekend, acting director sports, DHQ, Commodore Nuhu Bala, said the championship was an initiative of the Chief of Defence Staff to ensure that the children in the barracks are well developed intellectually to meet up with the emerging challenges around them.
Bala said the championship which is first of its kind had 126 participants within the ages of six to seventeen (6-17) from 11 military schools within Abuja.
He said the exercise aims to develop the intellectual capacity of the children to become critical thinkers.
“We have a lot of military barracks in Abuja, one of the motive behind this initiative by the CDS is to ensure that the children in barracks are well developed intellectually to meet up emerging challenges around,
“Chess game is one of the sporting activities that develop the intellectual capacity of children particularly if you get them young. It will help improve their critical thinking capacity,” he said
The director noted that the DHQ will collaborate with Nigerian sports federation to ensure that the exercise is conducted in professional manner.
In his remarks,the chairman, Bwari Area Council, Hon Musa Dikko commended the initiative, adding that the council will partner with the defence headquarters to promote the game.
He described the initiative as a way of taking children off the streets during and after school hours due to its demand for critical thinking.
Some of the participants who spoke to LEADERSHIP expressed delight at the programme.
LEADERSHIP reports that out of 11 military schools that participated three best students for the senior category came from command secondary school, Suleja.
