Again, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) at the weekend displayed their superiority over other services in the area of sports when it emerged overall winner at the just concluded 2018 Ministry of Interior Games (MIGA) which held in Kaduna.
In the ten-day sporting events, the NSCDC, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Ministry of Interior participated in 91 events across 13 Sports with a total of 90 gold, 90 Silver and 116 Bronze medals won.
NSCDC who is the defending champion of the MIGA having won the first edition won a total of 96 medals comprising 50 gold, 24 silver and 22 bronze medals in the 2018 edition to emerge champions back to back.
Nigeria Police emerged second with 87 medals comprising 31 gold, 32 silver and 24 bronze, while Federal Fire Service emerged third with 20 medals comprising two gold and four silver and 14 bronze.
Nigeria Immigration Service clinched 37 medals and fourth on the medal table with no gold, 12 silver and 25 bronze while the Ministry of Interior brought the rear with only two bronze medals.
In his speech at the closing ceremony of the 2nd edition of MIGA Games, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau said, “the objectives of the games were mostly achieved except for pockets of poor sportsmanship recorded in some venues, which does not portray the discipline that is expected in paramilitary service”.
He therefore called on athletes and officials that did not conduct themselves maturely and responsibly to desist from such acts because,adding that in the next edition, drastic measures will be taken against perpetrators.
As part of the ministry’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) he disclosed that, “ I hereby direct the Main Organizing Committee to donate the competition equipment and balls to two primary and two secondary schools located around the environs of the Ahmadu Bello Stadium and Murtala Mohammed Square”.
Speaking on his side’s victory, Assistant Commandant General, Zakari Ibrahim Ningi, who is the director, training,NSCDC headquarters, he commended the performance of their athletes which he credited to quality of leadership of the Commandant General of the Corps.
He said, their victory was also a result of hardwork, commitment and determination on the part of the athletes.
Also speaking on the games, the Chairman,Main Organizing Committee (MOC), Malam Alhassan Yakkut said the games has added impetus to the talent hunt of the Ministry of Sports and social Development and current form of the athletes.
