The Dep. Governor of Edo, Philip Shaibu, has charged the state’s athletes to the 19th National Sports Festival (NSF) to do the state proud and not be distracted with issues concerning their welfare.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the deputy governor told the state athletes that everything that had to do with their camping and daily allowances had been taken care of by the state government.
He said that all that was needed from them was to put up a good performance and make the state, as well as themselves, proud at the sports fiesta.
Shaibu stressed that the essence was for them to perform well in Abuja, based on the fact that the state plans to bid to host the 2020 edition of the festival.
“If we are going to host the next edition of the festival, we need to do well in this year’s edition.
“Please do not think of anything concerning your welfare, as that has been taken care of. All you need is to concentrate and make us and yourselves proud by doing well at the festival,’’ he said.
The dep. governor said that the state government’s plan for sports was beyond the sports festival, and included plans for the state’s athletes to compete in tournaments both within and outside the country.
According to him, “We have written to the various sports federations to avail us of any competition that is available for next year, to enable us to prepare and participate in such competitions as well.”
NAN reports that Edo athletes had on Tuesday morning protested over the non-payment of their camp allowances.
The protest, which took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin, led to athletes preventing workers and staff of the stadium from gaining access to the facility.
The athletes also protested against the alleged non-availability of training facilities at the camp.
