Queens College, Yaba, Lagos and Federal Government Boys College, (FGBC), Minna have emerged champions of the inaugural Federal Government Colleges Zonal Football Competition (FGC-ZFC).
Queens College defeated Federal Government Girls College, Abaji 4-2 in the female final to emerge champion, while FGBC, Minna, thrashed their Sokoto counterparts 2 – 0 in male final to win the category.
Speaking during the event, yesterday, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu stated that the maiden edition of the game has congregated future national male and female football teams of Nigeria.
Adamu represented by the Permanent Secretary of Education, Architect Sonny Echono, spoke at the finals of the competition held at the sports ground of the Federal Government Academy, Suleja.
He says through the now declared annual event, the education ministry is aiding in the sustenance of sports development in Nigeria. He enjoined all unity schools of the federation to respond to government’s gesture by ensuring their students are engaged in sports and other co-curricular activities to boost their intellectual abilities.
Also speaking, the Director, Education Support Services in the ministry, Mrs. Justina Ngozi Ibe stated that the idea for the FGC-ZFC took root in 2010, but was only able to become a reality eight years later, and geared at grooming students towards the idea of football, a lucrative sport, as a career.
“Not everyone is academically inclined. You have to discover their (students) talents, nurture them and encourage them to develop those talents. It is not always about the cognitive skills, the psycho-motor skill should be a part of the students’ training.
“The game has commenced and so has to be an annual event. We have encouraged all the schools’ principals to ensure that they intensify efforts in schools to encourage students.
“We also have a very cordial and collaborative relationship with the ministry of sports, as we have invited the ministry and the Commissioner for Sports, Niger State to the game,” Ibe concluded..
