The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared it  would not distracted with decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to decline assent on the Electoral Act amendment bill.

Rather, the commission says it will fine-tune its electoral guidelines inline with the existing Act.

National Chairman of the commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu made these known at a national peace conference on 2019 general elections organised by Youngstar Development Initiative with support from the National Democratic Initiative (NDI) .

He noted that the commission would not be distracted by the wrangling between the President and National Assembly over the proposed amendment.

The INEC chairman, who was represented by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Festus Okoye, assured that the commission would conduct an election which every Nigerian will be proud of.

“The commission is focused on organising the 2019 elections using the extant laws, using the laws that are valid as at today and we will not be distracted,” he said.

The chairman added that; “As a commission, we are fine tuning our processes and procedures towards delivering good elections in 2019. We have constituted a committee to oversee the situation room and the collation centres. The committee will be responsible for preparing reports from the situation room to the collation centres, it will be responsible for accrediting the media and party agents and arranging security for the venue.

“The commission is not bothered and will not be distracted by the hue and cry over certain issues and decisions taken by the president and the National Assembly.”
