Falana Tasks Lagos Assembly On Law For State Security Outfits To Carry Arms

A human rights activist and renowned lawyer Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) has called on the Lagos State House of Assembly to enact a Law empowering the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the state’s security outfit to carry arms.

Falana stated this at a one-day public hearing in Lagos on a Bill for a Law to amend Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps for regulation and control of Neighbourhood Safety Corps activities and other connected purposes.

He pointed out that if the law could empower Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration and Prisons Services to carry arms the same section of the Law section 214 Sub -Section 2 and 5 empowers state security outfits to carry arms with proper regulation and sanctions to forestall abuse by members.

Falana also said that the establishment of the Lagos State Police Security Trust Fund saved total collapse of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and security situation in the state.

While calling on the House to empower the LSNC officials to enter uncompleted buildings where miscreants use as hideouts to perpetuate crimes he said that the corps should be armed in order not to expose their lives to danger.

“The Lagos State government should take the initiative and strengthen security in order to secure all of us,” he declared

Falana also urged the House to enact a Law empowering the Corps to remove teenagers roaming the streets, adding that the Local governments should be encouraged to engage the youths.

He suggested that the Corps should be empowered to liaise with officials of Nigeria Immigration and Prisons Service so that inmates released from Prisons are monitored for at least six months so that they don’t indulge others.

The Lawyer posited that members of the Board should be drawn from the press, civil society groups amongst others so as to avert interference.

The Chairman of the Corps Mr. Isreal Ajao decried the appointment of Chairman on a part time basis adding that the job is a full time work.
